All changes for tens of millions of users
We live in dangerous times. The threat landscape has never been worse, prompted by him and a forensic industry using security weaknesses at a norm we have not seen before. And it is against this background that Apple has confirmed a security warning for tens of millions of users, which EFF describes as “an emergency for all of us”.
We are talking about removing the coded wrapping at the end of the iCloud in the UK after the secret/non -secret Pythonesque mandate by its government to build a background in the secure data store of all users. Apple has done as expected, and has attracted advanced data protection for UK users, although this does not meet the mandate. To use a poker analogy, Apple has called the UK bluff against a glitter of negative publicity.
Apple’s confirmation that “can no longer provide advanced data protection (ADP) in the UK for new users and current UK users will eventually have to disable this security feature” came with a warning that “we are heavily disappointed that the protection offered by ADP will not be available to our UK customers given the continued increase in data violations and other threats to client’s intimacy. “
While the new change only hits the UK users directly, it also affects anyone who teaches a user provided by a UK user will be stored in a reserve. And it risks a trend where other governments now do the same. We have seen a push across Europe to scan messages and the US has consistently pushed for “responsible encryption”, which means guaranteed access. As such, this change is much more dangerous than it seems, and all users should pay attention to the way their data is provided.
Technically, what has changed is the removal of encryption from bottom to bottom from a third applications that are not fully provided as default: photos, notes, memory and sound memorandums. But there is also a more critical change – copying your device and storing the iCloud machine will no longer be fully encoded and will be accessible by Apple.
If you are a UK user with activated ADP, Apple warns you will need to change your setting or delete your data – underlining the safety value in the first place, as Apple has no access to make the difference yourself.
But when we think of encryption from bottom to bottom, we first think of messaging applications that popularized this effective safety wrap. And there are serious implications here. Most iPhone users around the world are not using the extra security layer being removed in the UK, and so Apple’s warning applies to you. In particular with WhatsApp and Issssage, make changes now to support your safety.
First in the imessage of Apple himself, which was the first at the end of the encryption, but always had an Apple’s removal gap. That gap is now back. When you activate “ICLUD messages”, you save a backup database of your messages to enable mutual access and reset to a new phone. ADP closed the void, but the United Kingdom (and other places chasing the lawsuit) have forced it again. This means you either turn off the synchronization of iCloud or accept the sensitivity.
The situation with WhatsApp is different. The Meta Messenger, the most popular in the world from some distances, has built his success in encryption from bottom to bottom. and the intimacy of its 3 billion users. WhatsApp enables the end to the end to the end to the iCloud or Google Cloud, namely the iPhone and Android. This complete security is not affected by the change of the United Kingdom.
But in your iPhone settings, you can also activate a general iCloud WhatsApp reserve along with other applications, copying the backup of whatsapp itself. ADP removed the need for the coded copy of WhatsApp, as the standard iCloud reserve was also at the end of the self coded itself. This has now changed for the affected users. To ensure that your WhatsApp messages cannot be achieved, disable the iCloud backup copy and enable a backup coded copy to bottom by whatapp. You find this in reservation of settings-casualties-talks.
Similarly, if there are any app you do not want to be unsafe within a backup of iCloud, you must disable these from within your iCloud settings. When an app or platform offers a fully encrypted backup/synchronization, you may be better using this instead of iCloud if and until complete security is reset.
The Uber Secure Signal app, favored for its safety – despite warnings that the determination of its connected device has been used – does not offer a backup of the iPhone, and thus remains completely safe.
In response to forced movement, Apple says “remains committed to offering our users the highest level of security for their personal data and hopefully we will be able to do so in the future in the kingdom Joined.
In the meantime, you can ensure that your critical data remain secured – you just have to make some changes. ADP remains activated for existing UK users until Apple sets up and implement a time limit to turn it off. Users elsewhere should enable setting – you can find details here. NO-MB users without ADP are already executing these risks Apple has announced, and thus WhatsApp and Imessage changes also apply to you.
As I have commented before, it seems arbitrary for the United Kingdom to mandate this Apple, but not the same Google and Meta, in particular. The fact of changing Apple has been so public should give you confidence that if similar changes are made elsewhere, those platforms will have to remove security in the same way. Meanwhile, the United Kingdom is joined by the likes of China, Russia and Iran in its government crackdown.
